Why Contemporary Folk?

Even though this album uses electronic sounds and modern production techniques, EXPAND's songwriting approach, themes and concepts, arranging style, and vocal performance are all deeply rooted in the storytelling folk tradition. EXPAND represents a melding of traditional folk music exploration and thoughtful reflection - on topics including the nature of life, love and loss, passage of time, evolution of relationships with ourselves and with others - with contemporary instruments and production. Jez Harris' songwriting voice can be equal parts piercing and funny, informed by mythology, philosophy, and contemporary fiction alike, and able to penetrate the listener's defenses when it comes to preconceptions about the world and our place in it. He’s a boundary-pushing folk storyteller in the truest sense.
